Ebook About This wasn't in the contract.Simon Quigley had no idea what to expect when he agreed to do this for the money, but the eight-foot-tall pink alien isn't what he was expecting. For starters, Simon's straight. And Mohrn isn't a girl. The contract? It's unbreakable. It's going to be a long five years...Book 1 in the Maxim Colonies series. This sci-fi/space opera romance features a male human and a non-binary alien paring, a "mail-order bride" for hire trope, m-preg, aliens who look like aliens, smol and tall pairing, and a guaranteed HEA!Book Jailmates (Maxim Colonies Book 1) Review :
Overall I really enjoyed this book. The world building was great so hopefully there will be more in this universe. The characters were fairly solid, not to shallow. I really loved Mohrn I would love to read other books with more characters like them. The editing was good and the sentence structure and grammar were fairly smooth. I love a good HEA with some MPreg so I was very happy with the ending. The plot was reasonable without over the top angst. It could use a better title. The only parts that I didn’t like were more personal preference I think. Simon kept referring to Mohrn as ‘she’ even after he had been told that Mohrn’s race was non-binary and the Pfarn preferred they/them/their. He does this up until he meets Mohrn and then he starts using male pronouns. When Simon catches himself after he corrects himself he says “Whatever” like he doesn’t care and he feels it’s a waste of time for him to respect his mate by using the correct pronouns. Personally I found this very insulting. Most of the people I know who prefer non-binary pronouns would be really hurt if this was my attitude toward them. Simon finally gets it about 75% of the way through the book and then they switch to the fictional pronouns created by the author (Phey/Phem/Pheir). That was really confusing for me.The other thing was that for most of the book the intimate scenes were glossed over. They decide to do oral and the book says “So…we did.”. Simon's never done it before, he's faced with a mate whose equipment is MUCH bigger than a human, and now he just does it, no big deal. What? Simon spent his life believing he was straight but he meets Mohrn and he just switches teams without a second thought? Plus the alien biology was very different and he has no trouble adjusting to it. Part of why I thought this book would be so unique is because the way it dealt with gender was so different. But it just glosses over the issue. We don’t get to read anything about how Simon adjusts to such a big change. I was fairly disappointed by that. All in all I was really happy to see a romance with a non-binary character even if they were an alien. I hope this author writes more books like this. I would love to see other authors do the same. Good for this author taking a chance on this type of character. It was definitely worth the money. I really like how much we are inside the head of the human male main character. It's good to see how he progresses in his feelings and emotions. Simon is a young man getting out of the military, just trying to figure out what to do next with his life so he can take care of his mom and sister. Simon has a strong drive to care for family.Simon ends up contracting with a corporation to help them do research into the bonds developed by a species called the Pfarhn. It means he needs to be the contracted spouse to a Pfarhn who has been sentenced to prison, Mohrn.Watching how Simon and Mohrn develop in their/pheir relationship is fascinating and so sweetly romantic. The things they/phey do for each other are very reminiscent of The Gift of the Magi to me.This is not a male/male romance nor a male/female romance but it is a romance and a well-done romance.
