So this is my first book by this author and I went in expecting one thing and got something completely unexpected. I knew it would be a rough read based on the blurb alone but I expected the darker aspect of the story to be secondary to the romance piece. It wasn't. Not even a little bit. And I realized as I got farther and farther into the story that it couldn't be secondary. Because these things aren't secondary in life. They're raw and ugly and unforgiving - they can't be turned off with a switch so that you see only the shiny, happy story of two people falling in love.Honestly, I typically don't go for books that have this level of realness to them because I find that life is difficult enough and I like losing myself in the fantasy that most romance novels offer (my own included since I write m/m romance as well). And there were a couple times where I almost regretted starting this book. Because it was truly frightening in how raw and honest it was. But I'm glad I stuck with it because I did get to see what I am looking for when I pick up any romance - unconditional love that is truly just that.I hesitate to say too much because I don't want to give anything away. I will say that this book triggered me on several levels so I would recommend more sensitive readers pay attention to the warning in the blurb. And while I don't suffer the specific condition outlined in this book, I identified with many of the effects James suffered through and that did leave me feeling shaky on more than one occasion. I don't want to deter you from reading the book because it is truly phenomenal, but please take heart and understand that what James is going through is told in such unfiltered detail that it is as painful as it is heartbreakingly beautiful.All I can really say that this is one of those books that is going to stay with me for a very long time. Nicola Haken is a new author to me and I’m certainly a happy woman to have discovered her work right now.Broken is a story so real it’s creepy sometimes (in a good way kind of creepy). Like when you’re watching a horror movie and you feel the ghosts are right there with you. Who deals with mental illness knows what I’m talking about. Do you know when you're reading something and you say, "Wow, this happened to me" or "I know exactly what it is to feel like that". And at some point you look behind your shoulder, just in case? Yeah, "Broken" is that kind of story!James is a haunted man. Haunted by his demons. Haunted by an illness that not everyone understands. He’s the CEO of Holden House but his life is much more than that. He keeps a façade every single day. Until he meets Theo. Theo starts as a flirt, as a one night stand. But soon they realize it’s so much more.Theo is the perfect match for Kames. He’s loyal, he’s kind, he’s brave. James has the ego of an alpha male but in the end, he suffers. Struggles with a mental illness every day.The story is told from a dual POV and contains situations that may be a trigger to some readers. It’s tough sometimes. But if you can get through it, you will see that the story is absolutely amazing.I loved Theo & James.I cried so much with them and for them.The ending is just perfect.I couldn’t ask for more.The story has the right amount of angst, joy, love and lust.In the end, the lesson is “broken crayons can still colour"Live each day as if it was your last. Enjoy life. Embrace love.
